The exhibition presents the history of the reconstruction and conservation works on Malbork’s walls, interiors and furnishings. On 3 August 1817, Prussian King Frederick William III officially initiated the first restoration of the castle. Its medieval walls, after years of destruction and numerous transformations, were rebuilt and restored. The first stage of restoration was completed in the period of Romanticism, around 1850. The designs for the Palace of the Grand Masters and the west wing of the Middle Castle were prepared by Karl Friedrich Schinkel, while the works were supervised by Carl August Gersdorff.

In 1882, the second restoration was initiated, known as scientific or historical restoration. It was led by Conrad Steinbrecht, a prominent German conservator and architect, for 40 years of his professional life. Thanks to his efforts, the former Gothic architecture and interior design was restored and furnished with furniture, sculptures and artistic crafts, including large valuable collections of militaria and numismatic items. The castle survived as a museum and an example of 19th-century conservation efforts until the Second World War, when it was heavily damaged as a result of a siege lasting several weeks. After the castle was returned to Poland in 1945, rubble was removed and conservation of the historic walls began. From 1961, when the Castle Museum was established, extensive construction and conservation works were carried out for many years, supervised by Maciej Kilarski, which allowed to restore the former glory to the castle. In contemporary times it has been possible to restore the interior of the Great Refectory, complete the reconstruction project of the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary at the High Castle and restore the mosaic figure of the Madonna and Child. The exhibition mainly consists of reproductions of old photographs, as well as engravings and plans from the 19th and 20th centuries.

One of the noteworthy exhibits is the 1903 plaster cast of the Madonna’s head from a large, eight-metre-high mosaic-covered figure that stood in the eastern niche of St Mary’s Church until 1945, and was re-created in 2016. The north wall features a cardboard panel from 1911 with a 1:1 scale design of a wall painting intended for the Chapel of St Anne, by the eminent painter and stained glass artist Hermann Schaper. Another exhibit worth mentioning is the wooden model of the castle complex, made in the 1930s. It depicts Malbork around the middle of the 15th century, with all its residential and farm buildings and fortification system.

The “Amber Contexts” permanent exhibition displays some of the most valuable amber collections in the world. No other museum boasts such a large collection of objects from this material, which is extremely diverse, ranging from small beads, pawns, through carved figurines of various sizes, boxes, jewellery, to large structures, such as altarpieces, caskets and reliquaries. What is unique about this exhibition is that it demonstrates the history of amber processing, from artefacts produced in the Neolithic period and subsequent epochs, through products crafted in workshops over the centuries, up to contemporary objects.

The exhibition begins with the geological section, with an animated introduction showing an amber forest where the fossilised resin was formed more than 40 million years ago. It moves on to cross-sections and maps of the Fennoscandian Peninsula, where amber was formed in the Eocene epoch. Exhibits in this section include lumps of amber shaped by nature of different colour, degree of opacity and size, as well as works by contemporary artists inspired by them. A noteworthy example is the necklace by Mariusz Drapikowski, who made use of the natural fracture of a lump of amber into two parts, setting it in gold. Other unique specimens are inclusions collected by the museum, which immortalise fauna and flora that lived millions of years ago, including a fly, a cicada, a beetle, twigs of thuja and oak, as well as berries.

The next part of the exhibition shows early amber processing during the Neolithic, Bronze Age and the period of the Roman Empire. What is noteworthy about this section is the “amber treasure” from Niedźwiedziówka, where an ancient amber workshop containing several thousand pieces of amber was discovered. One of the most distinctive objects on display in terms of quality and size is the amulet found near Kąty Rybackie, decorated with an ornament in the shape of a cross, believed to be an ancient symbol of the sun.

The next stage of amber processing shown is the period from the 9th to the 11th century, when Truso – a large settlement and a trading centre was established on the southern coast of the Baltic Sea in the vicinity of present-day Elbląg, on Lake Drużno. This section presents numerous artefacts made of amber discovered during archaeological research.

The subsequent part of the exhibition covers the period of the late Middle Ages, when amber became very popular in the State of the Teutonic Order, which at that time held a monopoly on trade in this raw material. Among the objects on display here is an amber maker’s workshop reconstructed on the basis of a 15th-century engraving.

This part is followed by a section displaying masterpieces of amber art from the modern period, which are the core of the exhibition and the collection. They include magnificent altarpieces, caskets, reliquaries, figurines and jewellery. These objects were mostly created in the 17th and first half of the 18th century, mainly in Royal and Ducal Prussia. They impress with their craftsmanship, lightness of design and the range of colours, often with the amber tiles being arranged from the lightest to the darkest ones to form mosaics, supplemented with ivory or mother-of-pearl plaques. The exhibition features one of the largest amber altars in the world, decorated with ivory plaques, as well as works by Gdańsk master artists, including a reliquary and casket by Michael Redlin, and the most important item in the collection – a Baroque casket by Christoph Maucher. Other notable exhibits include a casket that previously belonged to Stanisław Leszczyński and a cabinet with scenes from the life of Stanisław August Poniatowski, donated to the Castle Museum in 1979 by Lady Barbara Carmont of Edinburgh. It is worth mentioning that the exhibition also features an object connected with Malbork Castle, namely the base of a crucifix, donated in 1825 for St Catherine’s Chapel in the Palace of the Grand Masters.

The next part of the exhibition takes the visitor to the 19th century, a period of great social change, when the amber guilds lost their importance and slowly ceased to exist. The products that dominated in the 19th and 20th centuries were mouthpieces for pipes, cigar boxes and shisha, as well as various boxes, caskets, medallions and jewellery. Traditional amber processing was preserved only in folk art, especially in the Kurpie region, where old techniques had been passed down from generation to generation since the Middle Ages.

The final part of the exhibition is devoted to the revival of the amber craft after the Second World War. In the 1960s, serial production was introduced, with the most popular products being Hawaiian-type beads. Soon after works of high artistic value started to appeared, including bracelets, rings, and pendants, where amber started to be used in unique combinations with other materials, including gold, silver, semi-precious stones, stone, wood, glass, and even ordinary string. Examples of such items include works by: Maria and Paweł Fietkiewicz, Giedymin Jabłoński, the PIRO group, as well as contemporary ones by Paulina Binek, Sławomir Fijałkowski, Fabrizio Tridenti or Manuel Vilhena, Arek Wolski and Beata Zdramyte. Every year, the Malbork amber exhibition is visited by hundreds of thousands of tourists from all over the world. It should be mentioned that, together with the architectural detail collection, it is the longest standing exhibition at the Malbork Castle Museum since 1965.

The interior of the medieval castle mill building, reconstructed in 1902, houses authentic modern mill equipment from the end of the 18th century. It is a good example that illustrates the approach of the conservators. The reconstructed former monastic buildings that did not survive till present times were furnished with elements of old architecture, such as medieval details or pillars. A set of wooden mechanisms from a dismantled horse mill near Malbork gives the new interior an aged look, at the same time preserving the region’s technical culture. However, these elements, including a wheel, were only placed there later, as the original Teutonic Knights’ mill was a water-powered facility.

The exhibition presents a part of the collection, the beginnings of which are closely linked to the events at the end of the second world war. The stained-glass window panels presented here were secured a few months before the front line reached the area. These types of works were typically dismantled as a preventive measure in places threatened by military operations. Stored in crates and hidden in the castle cellars, they survived the war.

Each of the windows of the castle church was glazed with compositions depicting Old and New Testament scenes. Most were made between 1891 and 1893, but some also date back to the Middle Ages. Currently, this group of medieval glass paintings forms part of the collection of the District Museum in Toruń and includes historical glazing from the churches of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St Nicholas in Toruń, as well as stained glass from the churches of Chełmno. The 33 panels presented at the exhibition are imitations of Gothic stained glass from Chełmno.

Malbork Castle, like most medieval structures in the region of the southern Baltic coast, represents the Brick Gothic style. The natural environmental conditions in this part of Europe were the reason for structural and aesthetic differences in relation to the structures built in the west of the continent, which were based on stone. Difference between those two styles of Gothic architecture can also be observed in terms of decorative elements. In the State of the Teutonic Order, or more generally in northern and central Europe, external and internal decorative architectural details were made of terracotta rather than stone, which was commonly used for that purpose in the west. Decorative fragments on display from castles and churches in the area of the State of the Teutonic Order are extremely diverse in their form. With the exception of a few pieces of decorative keystones made of wood, all the details are made of fired clay, sometimes decorated with glaze – a type of fired, coloured quartz-based coating.

The exhibition Three Centuries within Poland. Malbork Castle from incorporation to partition 1454–1772 is a historical exhibition, which covers over three hundred year-long history of the Polish castle of Malbork.

In 2006, the Infirmary rooms at the Middle Castle were adapted to house exhibits from the 17th and 18th centuries, the period when the castle belonged to Poland. The new exhibition continues the story of modern Malbork between 1454 and 1772. Two dates are extremely important for its history. The first one is the date of the outbreak of the Thirteen Years’ War and the act of incorporation of Prussia into the Kingdom of Poland. Malbork, like some of the cities of the State of the Teutonic Order, was incorporated into the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth thanks to the Second Peace of Toruń in 1466. Royal Prussia was established with the Malbork Voivodeship, where senior representatives of the Crown and local administration held office. Malbork Castle became the arsenal and royal residence. For more than three centuries it served as an important administrative and economic centre within Poland. The second important year is 1772, when the castle was taken over by the Prussians, who, under the Partition Treaty, occupied the whole of Royal Prussia except Gdańsk. The exhibition is housed in two attic rooms above the Infirmary and the kitchen of the Great Refectory, restored under the Norwegian Financial Mechanism. It consists of nineteen panels, which present selected issues from the castle’s history, including matters relating to administration, economy, visitors and residents, as well as religious relations, the turbulent times of the Swedish Wars and the Northern War. It also covers architectural transformations of the castle and its surroundings and the role of the city of Malbork. The materials used for the exhibition come mainly from the collections of the Malbork Castle Museum and include engravings, oil paintings, numismatic items, artistic crafts and Baroque sculptures. There are also numerous reproductions of documents related to the castle and the city from the collections of the Gdańsk and Warsaw archives, presented in showcases and on panels for educational purposes.
