The project entitled ‘Increasing the tourist attractiveness of historic buildings in the northern outer bailey of the castle complex in Malbork through conservation and construction works, including land development of the surrounding area.’, co-financed under the FEniKS Programme, shall include:

– renovation of the Church of St Lawrence,

– renovation of the former infirmary building,

– renovation of the Steinbrecht house

– land development

Tasks carried out as part of the Project:

During the project, the Church of St. Lawrence, the former infirmary building and the Steinbrecht house will be renovated and adapted for exhibition, storage, office and educational purposes. In addition to exhibition space, the former infirmary building will house a tourist information centre (ticket office) and a museum shop. All buildings will be adapted to the needs of people with special needs. The project involves the purchase of equipment and furnishings for exhibition and educational rooms, warehouses, offices, a conservation laboratory and other rooms.

The investment includes changes to the green landscape – the tree stand and low vegetation are to be looked after. There will also be an ecological trail to learn about the flora and fauna found on the grounds of the Malbork Castle Museum.

Target groups:

Through the introduction of a new cultural and educational offer and its accessibility, the project is aimed at all recipient groups: domestic and foreign tourists, residents of the region, children and young people, people with disabilities and special needs.

Project goals and results

The main goal of the Project is to protect and increase the tourist attractiveness of the Malbork Castle Museum by reconstructing and adapting the historic buildings of the outer bailey to serve as exhibition and educational facilities.

The adaptation of the reconstructed buildings for tourist and educational purposes is definitely going to contribute both indirectly and directly to the revitalisation of the city. In addition, the implementation of the project shall increase the number of tourists and local consumers of culture visiting the Malbork Castle Museum. The implementation of the project in question assumes the reconstruction of three historic buildings located in the outer bailey of the Teutonic Castle in Malbork and the location of the following functionalities there, which shall directly translate into an increase in the attractiveness of the institution’s tourist offer:

1. a) a permanent exhibition entitled ‘Gateway to the Castle’ on the first floor of the former Infirmary building,
2. b) temporary exhibitions located in a dedicated room on the second floor of the former Infirmary building,
3. c) 2 rooms for temporary exhibitions in the Church of St Lawrence,
4. d) an educational trail following the castle’s flora and fauna organised in the green areas adjacent to the Steinbrecht House,
5. e) educational rooms in the Steinbrecht House allowing for year-round workshops, including environmental education, and the organisation of temporary/poster exhibitions focusing on the region’s ecosystems,
6. f) new museum ticket offices on the ground floor of the former Infirmary building,
7. g) a museum shop on the ground floor of the former Infirmary building.

The development of new spaces for exhibition, cultural and educational purposes shall contribute to the expansion of the museum’s offer, which is set to be extended as a result of the project. The use of various forms of communication shall improve the quality of the visitor experience and make it more accessible to people with different needs.
