Press conference – commencement of comprehensive construction and conservation works at Kwidzyn Castle

On 26 June 2026, a press conference was held at Kwidzyn Castle concerning the commencement of comprehensive construction and conservation work at Kwidzyn Castle and the adjacent new development.

The meeting was opened by Director Dr Janusz Trupinda, who welcomed the guests: Deputy Minister of Culture and National Heritage Marek Krawczyk, Deputy Governor of the Pomorskie Province Emil Rojek, Sebastian Kasztelan, Mayor of Kwidzyn; and Piotr Stec, Adviser to Minister Adriana Porowska at the Chancellery of the Prime Minister.

The first guest to speak was Marek Krawczyk, Deputy Minister of Culture and National Heritage, who noted in his address that the project marked a new chapter in the history of the town and Kwidzyn Castle. ‘This project is of considerable significance for the entire region’, added the Deputy Minister.

‘It is wonderful that projects such as this are successfully carried out through the tendering process and contribute to our regional and local cultural institutions’, emphasised Emil Rojek, Deputy Governor of the Pomorskie Province.

Sebastian Kasztelan, Mayor of Kwidzyn, focused his remarks on the planned exhibition ‘This is Kwidzyn’ [i.e. This is Kwidzyn]. ‘The idea was for the Malbork Castle Museum and the City of Kwidzyn to collaborate to create this exhibition (…) Vacant premises in the old town are to be used specifically for this exhibition’.

Monika Rogalewska, the project coordinator, presented the key details of the project. ‘The main goal is to protect and enhance the appeal of Kwidzyn Castle by creating the appropriate infrastructure to encourage active participation in cultural life’, said Ms Rogalewska.

The conference concluded with a presentation of the project schedule. ‘We have now signed the funding agreement. We must complete all work on the project by the end of 2029. (…) The Museum is to remain open to visitors until the end of August 2026’, said Deputy Director Agnieszka Kowalska.

The project involves a comprehensive renovation, covering both the interiors and the exterior of the Castle in Kwidzyn. Work is to be carried out on all floors and involves a change in the use of currently unused spaces. In addition, the project assumes the adaptation of part of the facility at 1 Kruka Street for the permanent exhibition ‘Taki oto Kwidzyn’ [i.e. This is Kwidzyn]. Planning also includes furnishing the exhibition and other rooms with the necessary equipment.

The meeting was summarised and brought to a close by the Deputy Minister, who said: ‘Culture and national heritage are of paramount importance’.
