Passage with the Apocalypse

Along the eastern wing of the Middle Castle there is a picturesque cloister, where in seven pointed recesses, between the windows overlooking the courtyard, there are paintings with scenes taken from the Apocalypse of St. John. The future history of the world and the ultimate triumph of the Church are described here in seven visions.

The paintings were created at the beginning of our century during the scientistic (i.e. preceded by scientific research) restoration of the castle, but were painted over after the war. They were not discovered until 1997, and after conservation, they were made available to the public. Their prototype was a medieval manuscript from the mid-fourteenth century, created in one of the monasteries in Thuringia, kept to this day in the collections of the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg (redirection to the museum’s website)
