Chapter House

A decorative portal from the 14th century leads to the so-called Chapter Hall, a vaulted interior that covers almost the entire western half of the north wing. The inscription on the front door was taken from the chapter hall in the castle of the Margat Order in Syria: Sit tibi copia, Sit sapientia Formaque detur. Inquinat omnia Sola superbia Si cometetur. The current architecture of the hall comes from the time of the reconstruction in the years 1882-1890, as does the gallery of the great masters painted by Hermann Schaper on the walls, which, however, repeats a similar one that existed here in the Middle Ages. In the Middle Ages this interior served as convent’s refectory and was arranged as a chapter house by Prussian conservators. Stained glass windows from the 1890s by J. B. Haselberger, partly surviving after 1945, restored and supplemented in 1994. In the floor, visible openings for central heating of the room with hot air, supplied through wall ducts from the furnace operated one floor below.
