The ground floor of the east wing

The cellars under the Palace of the Grand Masters have been on display for over a dozen years. But the cellar complex under the entire west wing of the Middle Castle was opened recently, in 2009. It can be accessed both by a new staircase in the northern corner of the small courtyard, and by a wide circular staircase from the Palace, from the vestibule in front of the Winter Refectory.

During the times of the Order, the cellars performed economic functions, mainly providing food supplies. They were managed by a cellar brother, whose living and service room was located in the west wing of the High Castle. The large space of the large provisioning basement was covered with a massive rib vault on the buttresses – the most typical covering of the Teutonic basement rooms.
