Tomasz Najder has passed away

TOMASZ NAJDER (1951-2024)

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Tomasz Najder, an outstanding geotechnical engineer, who was instrumental in saving the west wing of the Middle Castle in Malbork. Mr Najder dies in Stockholm on Saturday, 18 May 2024, at the age of just under 73. A graduate of the Gdańsk University of Technology, he emigrated to Sweden in the 1970s, where he pursued a career in specialist construction, obtaining the position of director of Stabilator, a company belonging to the Skanska group.

He came to Malbork in 1991, when he developed a method of protecting the foundations of the western wall of the Great Refectory, which was in danger of collapsing, and throughout the 1990s he supervised complicated construction and conservation works in the western wing of the castle. After Malbork, he worked on a number of specialised tunnel constructions throughout Europe, dealing mainly with tunnel sealing work.

He will be remembered as a kind-hearted and helpful colleague, always ready to offer professional support.
