Workshop "The State of Preservation of Castles of the Teutonic Order after World War 2"
Workshops at the Center for Research on the Heritage of the Teutonic Order – November 22, 2024
The interdisciplinary workshops, whose program is included in the appendix, provided an opportunity to present and discuss the condition of castles after World War II as a starting point for conservation work and research, reconstruction, and revitalization. The invited guests represented various academic centers (Gdańsk University of Technology, University of Gdańsk, University of Warmia and Mazury), but also had practical conservation experience (Provincial Conservators' Offices in Gdańsk and Toruń). We wanted to ensure that, in addition to a scientific presentation of the state of research, the opinions of practitioners were also heard.
Selected castles located in the provinces of Pomerania, Kuyavia-Pomerania, and Warmia-Masuria were discussed, most of which have been rebuilt (some remain in ruins) and today serve very different functions: cultural, tourist, and commercial. The workshop format allowed for a free exchange of ideas and discussion, in which the audience also participated. In the presentations and discussion, in addition to pointing out good and bad examples of castle revitalization, their cultural value and great tourist potential were strongly emphasized. Workshops in this format will be continued.
