Study visit – National Museum – Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania in Vilnius

We were visited by museum professionals from the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania in Vilnius – the most prestigious place in Lithuania! The visit was no coincidence. As part of this international partnership, we plan to organise a temporary exhibition showcasing the history of the Malbork Castle complex, its complex past, and the history of the post-war Polish museum – the Malbork Castle Museum was established 65 years ago! The common history and shared cultural themes are the threads linking the two museums organising the event.

During their visit, our guests met employees of the Malbork Castle Museum, toured Malbork Castle and Kwidzyn Castle, and also visited, for example, the Nicolaus Copernicus Museum in Frombork and the local cathedral – they even climbed the tower.
The main purpose of the several-day meeting was to finalise the details of partnership regarding the organisation of the exhibition. We discussed around 250 museum artefacts, their transport and display at the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania in Vilnius. This study visit was an excellent opportunity to exchange knowledge and good practices between the two museums and to review the plans for the planned exhibition. The meeting was inspiring for both Museums.

The opening of the temporary exhibition ‘Eina garsas nuo Malburgo… Skarby Malborka’ is scheduled for September 2026. The exhibition is to be accompanied by a programme of related activities: a series of lectures and educational sessions, prepared jointly by both institutions. The content presented within the exhibition space and published in the accompanying materials shall be made available in Lithuanian and English.

The National Museum – Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania in Vilnius has been operating since 2013 in the Lower Castle, reconstructed in the Renaissance style, and focuses its activities on presenting the history of the place itself and the figures of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania, as well as organising temporary exhibitions on a variety of themes, mostly related to history and ancient art. More information about the Museum and its activities is available at: https://www.valdovurumai.lt/en/.
