Jarosław Struczyński on Gniew Castle during a period of political transition in Poland


On 8 June 2026, the outer bailey welcomed a special guest: Mr Jarosław Struczyński – a Polish social activist, cultural organiser, the mastermind and driving force behind the reconstruction as well as the cultural and tourist revival of Gniew Castle, organiser of historical and military re-enactments, founder of historical re-enactment groups, and an amateur actor.

The meeting took place at the Research Centre for Post-Teutonic Order Heritage. Ms Agnieszka Frost, Director of Gniew Castle, attended the meeting together with Jarosław. The guests were welcomed by the Director of the Malbork Castle Museum, Dr Janusz Trupinda.


Mr Jarosław Struczyński spoke about Gniew Castle during the period of political transition in Poland
The audience learnt about:
– the operation of a Prussian high-security prison for habitual offenders at the castle,
– the great fire at the castle in 1921,
– the castle’s role within the Polish Army,
– the castle in ruins and attempts to save it,
– the stages of the castle’s reconstruction and restoration work,
– the establishment of the Young Guides’ Club and the opening of the castle to tourists,
– and many other interesting topics related to Gniew Castle.
