Celebration of Polish-Lithuanian partnership at the exhibition opening in Vilnius

On 8 September 2026, the international temporary exhibition ‘Eina garsas nuo Malburgo… Treasures of Malbork’ was opened. The exhibition offers a comprehensive overview of the history of Malbork Castle. The opening in Vilnius brought together many important figures from the world of culture, politics and academia, who enjoyed excellent live music and learned about the background to the exhibition’s creation, as well as its objectives and significance for bilateral relations between Poland and Lithuania.

Polish-Lithuanian partnership

The exhibition’s opening ceremony began with a speech by the Minister of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania, Lukas Alsys, who emphasised the importance of inter-state partnership in shaping cultural and historical policy. He was followed by the current chargé d’affaires of the Republic of Poland in Lithuania, Rafał Poborski, who further reinforced the message regarding the value of joint efforts in fostering friendship between Lithuanians and Poles.

Next the directors of the institutions responsible for organising the exhibition in question – Dr Janusz Trupinda from the Malbork Castle Museum and Dr Vydas Dolinskas from the National Museum of the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania in Vilnius – explained to the guests the story behind the partnership. It is true that these museums have been working together for many years, but it was in 2021 that this partnership was formalised. Five years ago, at a meeting between the Presidents of Poland and Lithuania in Vilnius, an agreement was signed that opened a new chapter in Polish-Lithuanian partnership. The exhibition in Vilnius on Malbork Castle is the first result of this initiative and marks the beginning of further partnership. The directors announced that next year the roles are to be reversed, and the National Museum of the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania in Vilnius will present its own history and display its exhibits at the Malbork Castle Museum.

Later in the event, the exhibition’s curators took to the stage: Bartłomiej Butryn from the Malbork Castle Museum and Andrius Kerulis from the National Museum of the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania in Vilnius. The museum curators spoke about their motivations in creating the exhibition. The goal was to provide a comprehensive overview of the complex history of Malbork Castle over the centuries, as well as to showcase the achievements of the museum that looks after it, to mark the 65th anniversary of its founding.

The last speech was given by Tadeusz Podworski, President of BTA, a long-standing sponsor of the Museum of the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania and a sponsor of this exhibition. The event was hosted by Dr Ramunė Šmigelskytė-Stukienė, Deputy Director for Science and Culture at the National Museum of the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania in Vilnius.

The exhibition opening was made even more special by a performance from the ‘Archi Quartett’ string quartet and the baritone soloist Steponas Zonys. The musicians performed, for example, a composition inspired by a poem by the Lithuanian national poet Jonas Mačiulis-Maironis, part of which was used in the exhibition’s title. In this way the titular phrase ‘Eina garsas nuo Malburgo…’ is sure to remain in the memory of the opening’s guests for a long time.

The exhibition ‘Eina garsas nuo Malburgo… Treasures of Malbork’ is officially open. Visitors can admire it from 8 September to 22 November 2026 at the National Museum of the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania in Vilnius.

Co-funded by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage as part of the Inspiring Culture 2026-2027 programme. Project title: Eina garsas nuo Malburgo… The Treasures of Malbork – preparation of a temporary exhibition as part of the ‘Inspiring Culture 2026-2027’ programme, carried out in partnership with the National Museum – Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania in Vilnius.

The exhibition is organised with the support of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, headed by Marta Cienkowska.
