Dutch flagstones in former Polish and neighboring lands – volumes I and II, Piotr Oczko, Jan Pluis, Malbork 2018

Although studies on Dutch tiles are well established, research has been conducted for many years, and many new monographs and articles are published almost every year, so far there has been a lack of work on this subject in Poland. Resources in Polish collections have not been identified either. This gap is filled by the two-volume publication Dutch tiles on former Polish and neighboring lands, which is the first Polish compendium of knowledge about Dutch tiles written for art historians, museologists, collectors and ceramic artists.

Volume I: Washroom at the High Castle in Malbork. Its history and design by Piotr Oczko and Jan Pluis in cooperation with Artur Dobry is a monograph on the Malbork monument, which became a real sensation in the scientific world, as there were hitherto unknown decorations on the tiles.

Volume II: Fashions and interiors, by Piotr Oczko, deals mainly with old wall facings. The author drew attention to the cultural phenomenon brought about by the fashion for Dutch faience. Then he presented the preserved and lost monuments from the area of former Royal Prussia, the Commonwealth, East Prussia, Silesia and Western Pomerania.

The publication can be purchased stationary at the Castle Museum in Malbork and online at the online store: http://sklep5549667.homesklep.pl/pl/p/HOLENDERSKIE-FLIZY-NA-DAWNYCH-ZIEMIACH-POLSKICH-I-OSCIENNYCH-TOM1/362

Organization of life in the Teutonic castle in the times of the Great Masters, Sławomir Jóźwiak, Janusz Trupinda

The presented work is the third, corrected and supplemented edition of the attempt undertaken by Sławomir Jóźwiak and Janusz Trupinda in 2007 to comprehensively present the issues of topography, spatial layout and functioning of the Malbork castle in the Middle Ages, using the most complete source base possible. This book marks a new stage in the study of the history of the Malbork castle and convent and opens up new research perspectives.

The publishing house of the Malbork Castle Museum introduces a pioneering work devoted to the most popular medieval helmet – the capalin. It is divided into four chapters. The first concerns the capalines in Europe. The second one focuses on the evolution of their construction and form, as well as trying to answer the question of what types of these helmets are hidden behind the appropriate terms in written sources. The third chapter describes the production and cost of capalins and how to wear them, while the fourth chapter is devoted to a detailed description of the role of capalins in the medieval military in Poland. It is supplemented by an iconographic catalog of Polish medieval sources depicting helmets of this type. The work ends with an extensive catalog of material sources, in which the author described in detail 125 relics of this type of helmets stored in European and American museums, as well as once sold in auction houses and in private hands. Each monument has at least one photograph showing its image, sometimes supplemented with a reconstruction drawing. The work is accompanied by a flash drive containing additional photos of many of the described monuments (almost 500 photos in total). The work is richly illustrated with nearly 150 color images of medieval iconographic sources. Bound in a hard cover and published in A4 format, it will be a valuable addition to the library of anyone interested in medieval armaments.
