Publication “Christoph Maucher. An amber casket full of secrets”

“Christoph Maucher. An Amber Casket Full of Secrets” is the first publication dedicated entirely to this one of the most valuable works made in amber in the 17th century. It includes a study of the object’s history, iconography, decorative techniques and material analysis. The themes raised are illustrated by more than 100 photographs of the casket, including macro photography, fine art photography, analytical photography in various lights (visible, ultraviolet, infrared, X-rays). 

The publication is the aftermath of a research project carried out by the Malbork Castle Museum in the years 2021-2025, ‘Technological research on a casket by Christoph Maucher, the most valuable amber object in the collection of the Malbork Castle Museum’ and an exhibition organised at the Museum in 2024. The people responsible for the project and the exhibition were Katarzyna Kita (Assistant Professor, Amber Collection) and Jolanta Ratuszna (Head of the Conservation Studio).
