The exhibition ‘Teutonic Knight Straight Out of a Picture’ returns to the castle
From 10 February 2026, visitors are again invited to the temporary exhibition “Teutonic Knight Straight Out of a Picture”, which returns to the High Castle. The exhibition is currently located in the Dormitories, near Gdanisko.
The exhibition presents the image of the Teutonic Knight as a historical and cultural figure – from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. The starting point is the iconography of the Order’s great masters and the way in which their imagery has evolved through successive eras as a vehicle for memory, historical reflection and artistic interpretation of the past.
Visitors will see, among other things, portraits of the Grand Masters, artefacts associated with the Order’s modern tradition, as well as paintings depicting historical scenes and romantic visions of the Teutonic past. A special place is occupied by the works of Jan Matejko – preparatory sketches for the monumental Battle of Grunwald – showing the artist’s creative process and his view of one of the most important events in the history of the region.
Another important element of the exhibition is the unique processional banner commemorating Grand Master Herman von Salza, which, after conservation and its first public display, provided the impetus for this intimate but content-rich presentation.
‘Teutonic Knight Straight Out of a Picture’ is the story of how perceptions of the German Order changed – from real political power, through the historical memory of the inhabitants of ancient Prussia, to the romantic and artistic visions of the 19th century.
