Thursdays at the Outer Bailey (June) – a report on the event

Thursdays at the Outer Bailey Two altar panels from Sępopol – unknown examples of panel painting from the former Teutonic Prussia.

We got it! The latest meeting in the Thursdays at the Outer Bailey series is now behind us. Our guest was Dr Michał Kurkowski, an employee of the Department of Art and Artistic Crafts at the Malbork Castle Museum, who gave a lecture: Two altar panels from Sępopol – unknown examples of panel painting from the former Teutonic Prussia.
The speaker shared his findings and theories regarding the origin, craftsmanship and original function of the artefacts. The panels are a rare example of panel painting from the former Teutonic Prussia that have survived to this day. They were discovered in 2002 during conservation work on the church’s high altar. Due to their late discovery, the panels do not feature in the inventories relating to the church in Sępopol from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Following the lecture, a lively discussion ensued regarding the place of their creation and their origins.

We thank everyone for taking part in our Thursday meetings, and the speakers for the passion and commitment they showed in preparing their topics. See you after the summer holidays!
